At AHRN.com, we want to offer our readers a place to turn to when facing the challenge of a PCS. You know how it is when you get orders. You go to your Facebook friends list, find someone who is there or has been recently and get all the details! We are sharing the little things that help you to make a home at Fort Sill!

What are the best neighborhoods?

Far West, near Target or Elgin (if you don’t want to be on post)

What schools are considered the best?

Flower Mound and MacArthur

Where do I report to when I arrive ( service member)?

Building 4700- The Welcome Center is across from the Hospital (nearest to Fort Sill gate)
Is there anywhere traffic is especially bad?

It’s a very small town, so there is really not much traffic to worry about fighting other than on and off post at rush hour times – which is really not even a big deal!
Is there a preferred gate during high traffic times?

Sheridan (Bently gate) is very crowded after lunch time rush and in the morning. Key gate is not terribly bad, but now with all the new gate changes starting, things can be changing soon.

Can I get off post for lunch?
Absolutely. Traffic is busy, but if you give yourself a touch of extra time, you will be fine as long as you don’t go too far off. The gates are busy after lunch, but it only takes a few minutes to get through them.
Are there any policies specific to Fort Sill?

You must stop your car at 5 for retreat. Those in uniform must get out and salute. No cell phones while driving. Depending on which BDE you are with will be based on your pt attire – belt vs vest.

Where do you like to do your grocery shopping? Where is the best produce? The best prices?

Country Mart is where I find my best meats and produce. Some days, the commissary has decent things, I get a lot of my non-perishables there. In a pinch I go to Walmart, since it’s the closest off post store for all my needs. Country mart has a savings card which also allows you to save on gas the more you shop.

Where do you like to do your clothes/home shopping?

Oklahoma City. However, we now have Kohls and Target along with Bed Bath and Beyond, so things are getting much easier. If I need specific things, I go to the city, which is worth the drive if you have a list of things to get… plus it is fun! Penn Square Mall is the best for shopping selection.

What are your favorite local restaurants?

Meers, Chianti Wine Bar (serves food), The Back Porch

Where do you go if you want to grab a coffee with friends and relax?
Starbucks!
Best spot for a date night?

Chianti Wine Bar or Silver Spoon

What do you LOVE about Fort Sill?

This place has so much history. It has come a long way since the last time we were here, with new stores and places to eat. There is a lot to do on post for kids and families, as it is a small town outside the gate, so they try hard to have things to entertain.

What would you tell a friend who just got orders to Fort Sill?

Take the time to learn about and explore the history here. It is everywhere. Tie your things down outside during the Spring, as the winds are NO joke. Look for somewhere with covered parking to prevent hail damage to your car. Get involved. There is SO much to do, it is the best way to meet people. People love or hate it, but in my opinion, it is ALL what you make of it. You can’t blame anyone else if you are unhappy somewhere, there are ways to improve anything!
