What are the best neighborhoods?
The military community at JB San Antonio encompasses the communities of Ft Sam Houston, Lackland AFB, and Randolph AFB.
Fort Sam Houston is located just north of downtown San Antonio and is easily accessible from several directions with Terrell Hills, Olmos Park, and Alamo Heights are within a 15-minute drive.
Lackland AFB fields recommendations for Alamo Ranch. Many of the homes within the immediate vicinity are older, but a 15 or 20 minute commute brings you to very nice neighborhoods.
What schools are considered the best?
As in most cities, school ratings in San Antonio can vary widely. There are several highly rated schools, including Hardy Oak Elementary and Bush Middle School. The on post elementary school on Ft Sam Houston is very popular and accommodating with students of service members in the Wounded Warrior program. You can find more detailed information about specific school schools on greatschools.org.
Is there anywhere traffic is especially bad?
Traffic in San Antonio can be very heavy at peak times – 9 am and 5 pm. Gates experience pretty normal traffic. There multiple gates open that ease traffic and allow multiple options when it comes to picking neighborhoods.
Can I get off post for lunch?
Where do you like to do your grocery shopping? Where is the best produce? The best prices?
San Antonio is a large city and has a number of grocery shopping options including H.E.B and Central Market. AHRN.com uses report preferring the H-E-B on E Basse Rd.
What are your favorite local restaurants?
Our favorites were the Saltgrass and Bun N Barrel. From fine dining to Tex Mex, San Antonio has whatever you would like!
Where do you go if you want to grab a coffee with friends and relax?
Best spot for a date night?
Zinc, Paesanos, Ruth’s Chris, Ounce and JW Marriott are wonderful options for a dressed up night out. For a more relaxed experience, a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse or Jim’s at 410 & Broadway are sure to offer a good time!
Best energy-busters for the kids?
There is so much that is family friendly in San Antonio – Sea World and the River Walk, for example. MWR does a wonderful job of organizing and arranging for fun opportunities! If you are at JB San Antonio as a Wounded Warrior, there are organized classes and outings that you should not miss!
What do you LOVE about your duty station?
San Antonio has an incredibly vibrant culture of its own that is wonderfully supportive of the military community. There is so much to do and enjoy and the weather is great!
