Why do we celebrate Veterans Day?

We celebrate Veterans Day to honor the soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen who put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms that we take for granted.

The day the war officially ended with the Treaty of Versailles. The fighting ended 7 months prior at 11 o’clock on November 11th, 1918. Later called Armistice Day.

This day was meant to remember those who fought and died in World War I.

U.S., Armistice Day was eventually changed to Veterans Day by President Eisenhower.

June 28th, 1968

The Uniform

This bill was signed to create three-day weekends for Federal employees on four national holidays: Washington’s birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day.

October 25th, 1971


The first Veterans Day under the Uniform Holiday Bill was on October 25, 1971. This caused outrage that the historical significance of November 11 had been ignored.

VA provides grants to Servicemembers and Veterans with certain permanent and total service-connected disabilities to help purchase or construct an adapted home, or modify an existing home to accommodate a disability. Two grant programs exist: the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant and the Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant.

If you know a Veteran who is homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless, refer him or her to a local VA Medical Center, where VA staff are ready to help. Veterans and their families can also contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AID-VET to be connected to VA services.
