New DoD Blended Retirement System

Written by AHRN Team Updated on March 10, 2020

The new DoD Blended Retirement System goes into effect January 1, 2018.  This new system provides eligible military members with an option to the traditional retirement plan.

To help eligible members decide which program is best for them, the Defense Department has launched a comparison calculator for eligible service members to analyze their estimated retirement benefits under the legacy system and the new Blended Retirement System.

All members serving as of December 31, 2017, are grandfathered under the legacy retirement system. No one currently-serving will be automatically switched to the Blended Retirement System.

Eligible service members have until Dec. 31, 2018, to enroll in the new system. Military members who enter service on or after Jan. 1 will automatically be enrolled in the BRS.
