Naval Base San Diego is a popular assignment partially because of its urban California location. When life gets busy, it is too easy to forget that each duty station offers opportunities for fun and learning. AHRN.com shares 5 local attractions that should be on your NB San Diego must-do list.
1. Balboa Park
Located at the heart of down town San Diego, Balboa Park is 1,200 acre concentration of museums and other attractions. Parking and many of the attractions are free with plenty of room for a stroll to enjoy the Spanish Renaissance architecture. There are 15 museums and the San Diego Zoo within Balboa Park if you’re looking for even more to do. During the summer, the San Diego History Museum in Balboa Park participates in Blue Star Museums (offering free admission to active duty military). The park is very popular, so give yourself plenty of time to wander.
2. Coronado Beach
California’s coast offers some of the most scenic views in America. While you are aboard NB San Diego, it would be a shame to miss the jaw dropping vista offered by Coronado Beach. From shopping to history to art, Coronado offers opportunities to enjoy California’s beauty at every turn. Want to wow your significant other with date to remember? Start the day by enjoying the historical Hotel del Coronado’s Sunday brunch in the Crown Room. Wander the shops at Coronado Ferry Landing and pick up artisan bread, olive oil and wine for a beachfront picnic to enjoy the famed Coronado sunsets and panoramic views of San Diego.
3. Gaslamp District
With a tremendous range of shops, dining and entertainment, the Gaslamp District offers something for everyone with dash of historical flair. Parking can be tricky (its a popular place!) but you can park at Horton Plaza and get 3 hours free with validation. Take the Old Town Trolley Tour to get the lay of the land, then explore the shops, restaurants and art galleries. Make sure to visit and say thank you to these establishments that offer military discounts!
4. Torrey Pines State Reserve
Take a break from city life and enjoy the 2000 acres of undeveloped wilderness that lies within San Diego city limits at Torry Pines State Reserve. Spend the day hiking 8 miles of trails and enjoy breathtaking coastal views. Admission is $10 -$15 depending on where you park and the time of year. An often untold secret is that there are two, usually uncrowded and beautiful beaches within the reserve. Just make sure that you pack your own food and water because there are no vendors inside the park itself.
5. USS Midway Museum
Play tourist for an afternoon and explore the USS Midway Museum. Explore more than 60 exhibits and admire 29 restored planes as you tour the longest serving aircraft carrier in the Navy. An especially popular tourist attraction, avoid long lines by purchasing your tickets ahead of time. Active duty military benefit from free admission, but family members are regular price.
