The Hampton Roads area is a concentration of military installations including Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake. With representation by all of the branches, it is a wonderfully military friendly place to live!
What are the best neighborhoods?
Common Fence Point, Melville or Green Lane housing.
What schools are considered the best?
Portsmouth school district or Middletown school district are the most highly sought after. Check out more specific school data at greatschools.org.
Is there any major traffic spot I should avoid?
Pell bridge during peak times – between 7:30 am to 8:45 am, and 3:30 pm to 5:30. Also, in downtown Newport all summer long due to tourist season and during peak times.
What is the easiest gate to get through during peak times?
Gate 17 will have the quickest time frame to get aboard Navsta Newport, but do expect 15 minutes as an average delay.
Are there any unique local policies?
No base decals are needed on vehicles, but no vehicles are allowed to enter Naval War College area without proper NWC tags displayed. Also, there’s no parking allowed at Surface Warfare Officer School without proper SWOS vehicle decals.
Where do I (service member) report when I arrive?
This will depend on many factors. For example if you are reporting to Navsta Newport, it will be done at 690. If you are student attending NWC, you’ll report to the Dean of Students office. If you are a staff at the War College you will report to the Military Personnel Office. Each command will be different, so check with militaryinstallations.dod.mil for check-in procedures for your command.
Can I get off post for lunch?
Where do you like to do your grocery shopping? Where is the best produce? The best prices?
Again, There are many choices. The commissary has a great produce selection and their prices on meat are very reasonable. If you find yourself living farther from base there are several grocers to choose from, such as Stop n Shop, Shaws, Super Walmart, as well as smaller grocers like Tom’s or Clements Market.
Where do you like to do your clothes/home shopping?
Most things can be found on Aquidneck Island, but with three different shopping centers within driving distance, it’s worth it to shop off island.
What are your favorite local restaurants?
The Mooring, Buskers, The Fastnet, K&J’s, Siam Square are all favorites!
Where do you go if you want to grab a coffee with friends and relax?
Best spot for a date night?
Home or any several restaurants or museums.
Best rainy day energy busters for kids?
Sky zone, Kidz Castle or Bounce.
What do you LOVE about Hampton Roads?
It’s rich history, and the many things to see and do within a days drive.
