At AHRN.com, we want to offer our readers a place to turn to when facing the challenge of a PCS. You know how it is when you get orders. You go to your Facebook friends list, find someone who is there, or has been recently, and get all the details! We are sharing the little things that help you to make a home at NAS Jacksonville!
What are the best neighborhoods?
For those who like an urban feel, St Johns Town Center is conveniently located to 9A / I-295. Service members could reach NAS within 15-20 minutes depending on traffic and be going against most of the traffic each way. The Bay Meadows and Deerwood area are desirable with recent construction and convenient shopping.
What schools are considered the best?
Montclaire Elementary School is a well regarded option for those living off the installation. Check out the ratings on GreatSchools.org for any of the homes you are interested in.
Is there anywhere traffic is especially bad?
Traffic around the river and the bridges can be challenging. Finding the right place to live is partially about knowing how much traffic you want to deal with! For NAS Jacksonville, access to I-295 and U.S.-17 give access to Jax main gates.
Can I get off post for lunch?
Where do you like to do your grocery shopping? Where is the best produce? The best prices?
The commissary at NAS Jacksonville is a great source for inexpensive meats and there are good deals to be had. It is wise to shop around, as there are plenty of grocery stores in the area that offer less expensive generic brands for many pantry items. Also, Florida does not tax many grocery items, so you’ll save by not paying the commissary’s surcharge.
What are your favorite local restaurants?
For true local flavor, visit JL Trent’s Seafood and Grill. From steak to crab legs, the food is delicious and the service friendly. Locals say to make sure you don’t try to dine in a hurry — the food is too good to keep secret so he weekday lunch rush can cause quite a wait, but worth it if you have the time.
Where do you like to do your clothes/home shopping?
The Town Center is the area’s largest shopping and dining center with an open mall concept, and the retailers run the gamut from Louis Vuitton, Ann Taylor, Apple and Brooks Brothers to Old Navy, Payless and Target. The landscaping, lighting and outdoor music make for a lovely environment in which to stroll from shop to shop.
