At AHRN.com, we want to offer our readers a place to turn to when facing the challenge of a PCS. You know how it is when you get orders. You go to your Facebook friends list, find someone who is there or has been recently and get all the details! We are sharing the little things that help you to make a home at NAS Corpus Christi!
What are the best neighborhoods?
NAS Corpus Christi is in the Flour Bluff area, which is ten miles southeast of the city of Corpus Christi. Flour Bluff is a suburban, coastal community that is popular with people commuting into Corpus Christi itself. Corpus Christi Country Club is a golf course community within easy commuting distance (less than five miles) that is highly desirable. Pelican Bay Estates is an older community but allows you to avoid South Side traffic and offers waterfront lots.
What schools are considered the best?
Local schools are run by Flour Bluff Independent School District and the Corpus Christi Independent School District. Flour Bluff High School earns a solid rating of 8, with the elementary and middle schools earning 7s. You can find more detailed information about specific schools on greatschools.org.
Is there anywhere traffic is especially bad?
Traffic from South Side can be particularly heavy, and the gates can get busy at predictable times for a training installation. It isn’t too complicated if you want to live farther out and closer to the amenities of Corpus Christi itself.
Can I get off post for lunch?
Where do you like to do your grocery shopping? Where is the best produce? The best prices?
The commissary is an option but there are also many close by options off base, especially if you don’t mind driving a little farther or live outside of Flour Bluff.
Where do you like to do your clothes/home shopping?
Corpus Christi has just about anything you would need, and San Antonio is less than two hours away if you want to visit a bigger city.
What are your favorite local restaurants?
If an exceptionally delicious burger is right up your alley, you need to check out Wallbangers Gourmet Hamburgers – which is also super kid friendly and casual. Surfside Sandwhiche Shoppe is a must-experience with the bonus of being inexpensive!
Where do you go if you want to grab a coffee with friends and relax?
Best spot for a date night?
Make it a day on the first weekend of the month and enjoy the Art Tram Tour, ArtWalk, Marina Market Days, and the Harbor BridgeWalk! Get out and enjoy the water with some kayaking. Go for an afternoon drive and take the scenic route from downtown along Ocean Dr. with gorgeous views of the bay. Make sure to drive across the JFK Causeway to Port Aransas and then take the ferry to Aransas Pass then on to Portland, and finally over into Corpus Christi, and over the Harbor Bridge.
Best energy-busters for the kids?
Locally, you can visit the International Kite Museum, USS Lexington Museum, the local beach, or the botanical gardens. South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center offers 180 acres of natural beauty with gardens for strolling and plenty of trails for hiking.
