Fort Campbell is a popular assignment for soldiers and military families who enjoy the outdoors. When life gets busy, it is too easy to forget that each duty station offers opportunities for fun and learning. AHRN.com shares Land Between the Parks – a national park that should be on your must-do list.
Situated between Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area offers service members based at Ft. Campbell, KY, an opportunity to enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, boating and more. The park offers over 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline to explore. Created by President Kennedy in 1963, Land Between the Lakes is the largest inland peninsula in America. The result is a tremendous amount of shoreline and lake access that stretches across the border between Western Kentucky and Tennessee. Today, America’s national parks offer service members discounted or free entry to many attractions!
There are camping opportunities that range from primitive camping to sheltered cabins to fully developed RV hookups complete with showers and bathrooms. Even if you are opting for a more secluded camping option, there are picnic tables, fire rings, boat ramps and other amenities located throughout the park.
Bring your boat, canoe, kayak or fishing rod – there is plenty of room! More than 22 lake access areas are spread through out the park. There are boat ramps, courtesy docks, fishing piers and six beaches available for day access or camper use. Boat rentals are available at Land Between the Lakes, but service members might want to check out MWR equipment rentals for a variety of pontoon, fishing, and speed boats.
In the Saddle
Land Between the Lakes features a popular horse camp called Wrangler’s Campground. For horse owners, these are campgrounds that allow you to trailer in your horse and enjoy miles of scenic wagon and riding trails. Simplify your horse camping experience with the stalls, farrier service and watering troughs available at Wrangler’s Campground. If you don’t own your own horse but would love to add some saddle time to your camping vacation, Rocking U Riding Stables offers guided trail rides for campers six years old and up.
Even a vacation can be more fun when combined with the opportunity to learn! Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area offer many different opportunities to experience nature. The Woodlands Nature Station offers wildlife viewing (including resident deer and birds of prey), guided hiking and canoe excursion and homeschool resources. Golden Pond Planetarium offers special shows to help aspiring astronomers learn to identify constellations and discover black holes on the planetarium’s 40 foot dome. Nearby, telescopes are available at the Golden Pond Observatory for true experiential learning! Take a step back in time with the Living History of The Homeplace – a mid 19th century working farm. Learn about the hard work required to farm before modern agriculture and meet several endangered breeds of domesticated cattle, chickens and sheep. The Homeplace actively cultivates heirloom varieties of several crops including corn and tobacco.
If you and your family are stationed at Fort Campbell, Land Between the Lakes should make the Duty Station Bucket List!
