A Virginia-based moving company is making a name for itself by hiring former service members.
Two Marines founder Nick Baucom believes hiring employees with military backgrounds puts his company in a class above his competition.
“You have to be able to trust the people you invite to work in your home. We take great pride in hiring from amongst those that have served our country. Our troops know the meaning of mission accomplishment, integrity and the value of hard work. Our company policies promote the assurance that your job will be completed right and without damages,” states Baucom on his website.
“We even provide incentives to every mover at Two Marines Moving. When they go 15 consecutive moves without a damage, they receive a bonus. If they damage an item, they start back over at zero. From the people we hire to our policies, we make every attempt to make your moving mission a smooth experience,” he states.
Baucom launched his company in 2008 after helping friends move and realizing the potential value of a good moving company. To date, the company has successfully handled more than 20,000 “moving missions,” as he calls them, and employs more than 90 veterans.
Two Marines Moving is based in Alexandria, Virginia, and recently opened a second office in the Miami, Florida, area.
Baucom started the business when he was 24, after a home repair business failed. But the initial failure set him up for future success. He told the Washington Post in a 2014 story that going through bankruptcy taught him to persevere – to learn the lesson and move forward; to leverage – to grow organically, reinvesting profits in the company; and to be proficient – to know how to do every job at the company he runs in order to better understand his business and what his employees are tasked with.
His ex-wife and company co-founder, Christy Gutmann, works as vice president of the company, which branched out to include a storage business in 2013, which has helped increase profits. The company made $4.1 million in revenue in 2014, earning it a ranking in Inc. magazine’s fastest growing private businesses.
Two Marines only hires workers with a military affiliation, but doesn’t focus on just one branch of the military. The company hires from the Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, as well as law enforcement, ROTC students and prospective entrants to the military. As a prospective entrant to the military, you must have talked with a recruiter and be waiting for a ship date for basic training/boot camp.”
That doesn’t mean the company name is a misnomer – chances are good if you hire Two Marines Moving, at least one of the workers will give you an “Oorah” – about 70 percent of the company’s employees hail from the Marines.
“When you hire Two Marines Moving, you directly support those who have served our country,” Baucom says in a video on the company’s website. “The more we move, the more we can support our veterans.”
