At AHRN.com, we want to offer our readers a place to turn to when facing the challenge of a PCS. You know how it is when you get orders. You go to your Facebook friends list, find someone who is there, or has been recently, and get all the details! We are sharing the little things that help you to make a home at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam!
What are the most desirable neighborhoods to live in?
Pearl City, Millilani and Aiea are popular choices for their proximity (especially to Hickam) and affordability. There is considerable variety in commute time and neighborhoods. Most military families find it beneficial to take some time after arriving in Hawaii in short term on base housing to find out where the service member will be working so the commute can be taken into consideration.
What schools are the most desirable?
You can check out Great Schools to research which option is the best fit for your family. Not sure what questions to ask? AHRN.com can get you started with how to choose the right school for your kids.
Is there anywhere the traffic is especially bad?
Being a densely populated area, traffic at rush times can be considerable… especially on H1. It is a good idea to become familiar with alternate routes and avoid the highest traffic times when ever possible – particularly going into down town Honolulu.
Where do I (service member) actually report to when I arrive?
Service members should report directly to their command, and remember to get your orders stamped to start your TLA. If you don’t know where to report to, check in at the Naval Stations Pearl Harbor Quarterdeck Building 150 (Phone 808-473-1222).
Can I (service member) get off-post for lunch or does traffic make it a no-go?
Traffic can be considerable, but JBPHH is a large installation with plenty of choices both on and off.
Where do you grocery shop?
Groceries are one area that many service members feel the pinch of the higher cost of living in Hawaii. The commissary often offers savings substantial enough to make it worth the trip for those living off base.
What are your favorite restaurants around JBPHH?
Honolulu is a wonderful place for those who really enjoy good food. For a spectacular breakfast, try the Eggs Benedict on a weekend morning at Cafe Kaila. Enjoy craft beer and pub food? You can’t go wrong with REAL a gastropub. Take the time to explore local haunts and don’t forget the beach food trucks!
Where do you like to do your clothes/home shopping? Is it worth the drive to go out of town anywhere?
With easy access to Honolulu, shopping is readily available! It is important to note that if you like to order clothes online, shipping is often extra to HI.
Where do you go if you want to grab a coffee with friends and relax?
The beach! You just can’t get around the gorgeousness of Hawaii’s scenic beaches and ocean views.
Best spot for a date night?
Picnic on the beach? Amazing! Or, if you like to work up a sweat, there are stunning vistas on island hikes.
What do you LOVE about JBPHH?
There is plenty to love about Hawaii – the weather (!!), the beaches, the ocean. You’ll probably have more visitors that at any other duty station (which could be good or bad), and you’ll get to enjoy a bit of island life.
What else would you tell your friend who has just received orders?
Take the time to explore and get outside of the tourist areas.
