You have orders in hand. You have researched your next duty station. You are ready to get this show of a PCS on the road! Keep things organized with these seven Dollar Store finds!
1. Clear plastic tubs
Use clear plastic tubs to organize the items that you are keeping with you and will be transporting in your car. Keep a separate tub for the first things you will need when you get in your new home: box cutters, basic toolkit for assembly, toilet paper, disposable plates and utensils and basic cooking tools. In a clear tub, they are easy to find and help you to get a smooth start at your new duty station.
2. Large plastic bins
During the packing process, the shippers will try to fill each box as full as possible. Often this means that items that belong together get separated. Keep collections of smaller things together by packing them carefully in large plastic bins. At your destination, it will simplify unpacking and organizing!
3. Trash bags
As you are finishing up at your current duty station and getting settled at the new one, you will need trash bags! Grab a box or two and leave them in the clear bin you have set aside to open first when you get to your destination!
4. Collapsible bins
If your travel plans between duty stations include a road trip, these bins can come in handy! Use them to corral the kids’ items or organize your trunk. It’s easy for items to get scattered during the process of moving. A little planning and strategic use of these flexible containers makes life just a tad bit easier when there is less mess around.
5. 3 ring binder
Even with the Army moving to a more digital age, a PCS generates an incredible amount of paperwork. Pick up a 3 ring binder, fill it with sheet protectors and use it to keep track of copies of orders.
6. Coloring books for the kids
This isn’t exactly organization but if you are moving with kids in tow, a little distraction can be a tremendous help! Be prepared with coloring books, crayons and some new books or games to keep them busy while you are cleaning, traveling and getting situated at your new home.
7. Car kits
Ease the anxiety of leaving behind what you know with fun car kits for each family member. Fill with favorite snacks, a special book or toy and something that represents your new duty station.
